Witchcraft wasn't affected by religion. It was a religion, but it was a paganist religion. It was already a well established institute of beliefs before Christianity or any other modern day religion.
it was a time when people were starting to once again become interested in the science of the way the things around them worked. The churches realised that if learning and enquiry was not stopped they would eventually lose control over the peoples sense of how things worked. So they quelled innovation investigation and better ways of doing things. what would be seen as a scientific advance today as witch craft or the work of the devil. A charge of witchcraft was also a convenient way for the church to attain the property of convicted so called witches. There was a period when the church was deeply involved in trying to maintain the superstition fear and ignorance upon which they had thrived for so many century's. The witches male and female that the church feared were simply people that were smart and inquisitive. the ones that they made an example of were just unfortunate victims of hysteria built up in poor ignorant and superstitious people. Eventually improved access to literature and education started to put a stop to it. There is a similar revolution going on in sections of the Muslim faith today, where women are being reduced to uneducated lumps that are there to clean and use for sex.
The Catholic Church influenced Witchcraft greatly due to their persecution of followers of Pagan faiths. It forced the people who believed in the Old Gods and who practiced magic to go into hiding out of fear of being tortured and killed. The church is responsible for destroying nearly all historical records of ancient paganism and replacing them with biased information that they themselves chose to distribute. It was because of this persecution that there is little information on the actual practices used by our Pagan ancestors save for the bits and pieces that have survived in hiding by some believers or that had mutated into a Christianized version.

Verona, like all of Italy, was Roman Catholic during the 16th century. Indeed it's primarily Roman Catholic now.
There is very little known about the true practices of Witchcraft and Paganism in the middle ages due to that the only historical documentation of the practices were transcribed by Christian clergy whose documenting would have been biased to further their assertions of Witchcraft being evil.
