England interfered very little in colonial affairs. Governors rarely enforced the laws. Colonists got used to acting on their own, therefore encouraged growth of self-government and independence. Colonists also established their own legislative bodies to make and enforce their own laws like the Virginia House of Burgesses.

∙ 15y agoBecause salutary neglect was an undocumented, though long standing, British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws meant to keep the American colonies obedient to Great Britain. Prime Minister Robert Walpole stated that "if no restrictions were placed on the colonies, they would flourish", which is important because before they had believed in Autonomy.

The American colonies understood that while this policy was in place they could not grow. The Revolutionary War was an attempt to break free of this type of governmental leadership.
