Smitty, as well as all of the other white workers treat Crooks as a sport and look down on him. An example of this is the fight between Smitty and Crooks on Christmas, Smitty says that he would have killed him if he could have used his legs.
Smitty treated the black worker with disrespect and cruelty, mocking him for his physical disability and making fun of him in front of the other workers. This behavior highlights the racism and discrimination prevalent during the time period the novel is set in.
