In many adverse ways, as on might expect. For instance, a major way was when General Sherman crossed into the south and followed a "scored earth" policy, numerous cities were destroyed, including atlanta which was set alight. Railroads were destroyed, cotton fields destroyed, anything that could have benefitted the Confederate States' economy was pretty much wiped out if Sherman took over.
