It led to the sacking of Braxton Bragg on the Confederate side and boosted the credibility of US Grant on the Northern side.

Bragg was replaced by Joe Johnston, who conducted a slow tactical retreat towards Atlanta - possibly the 'least worst' option, but regarded as not in the Confederate spirit, so he too was replaced by John Hood with disastrous results.

Grant would soon become General-in-Chief of all the Northern armies - a good appointment that led to victory.
