The French were a major power, the third most powerful probably, in North America. The French had a very large claim in North America, particulary in Northern America and the Caribbean. However, they were virtually kicked out by the British during the Seven Years' War. It was a battle between the British and the French for the claimed lands, and the British won. However, the British only got a small portion of the once French lands, as the French transferred the majority of their claims to their ally, Spain (this territory was Louisiana Territory). The French later got back their Louisiana Territory and was again a major power. They sold the land to the new country of the United States years later, however, because they had no use as a result of their failing sugar cane businesses in the Caribbean (Haiti). By this time, the French were basically diminished to nothing. However, the French made a major comeback in Canada just in the 1870s which lasted up until 1999.
