There are thousands of tribes with as many customs, traditions and beliefs. Generally, before reservation life, native peoples were free to worship in their own ways, to hunt and gather their own foods and to live as they have for thousands of years. It is very important, however, to remember that not all Indians went to live on reservations. In fact, it is believed that more people, especially on the east coast were assimilated into white society and never stepped a foot on a reservation.
Unfortunately, life has changed drastically for the worse for the Lakota. They once subsisted off the land, but government aid has them living ramshackle houses, gripped by Alcoholism.
They could no longer roam, fish, and hunt freely on their homelands. They could no longer practice their religion freely. They had to get white man's educations, religions, and jobs.
