How did the Trail of Tears effect the US?

along the way, government officials stole the Cherokee's money, while outlaws made off with their live-stock. The Cherokee buried more than a quarter of their people along what came to be known as the trail of tears. when they reached their final destination, they ended up on land for inferior to that which they had been forced to leave.

After being forced to relocate during the harsh winter, leaving their beloved homelands behind, leaving their dead relatives and friends along the trail, and moving to a land very different from what they were used to, they were affected very much as a result. They had to rebuild their lives from the ground up, the people were divided politically. There were killings among the factions of government.

One change was to Cherokee law. Prior to this act the Cherokee had one law called the law of the snake, the 2nd half of this law allowed the tribe to kill not only the law breaker but his/her entire family for violating the law. After the treaty signers and their families were killed (a large number of people) the Cherokee repealed the 2nd half of that law allowing only the killing of the law breaker, not the family.

Cherokee lost all trust for the US Government and american's because of the Trail of Tears. Some Cherokee started up war and raiding parties.

Currently there are two basic sets of Cherokee, those that think the US Government and the current Cherokee government (a mirror image of the USA) are good things and dissidents (called Domestic Terrorists) who believe that both of these governments violate the essence of the Cherokee people and international law.

The Trail of Tears is a reminder to us that the US Government will murder, in mass, to get what it wants and it (including its citizens) cannot be trusted.
