The Louisiana Territory was a land purchase by the United States of America of 828,800 square miles of the French territory "Louisiane" in 1803. The U.S. paid 60 million francs ($11,250,000) plus cancellation of debts worth 18 million francs ($3,750,000), a total cost of $15,000,000 for the Louisiana Territory.
Initially, President Thomas Jefferson had sought only the rights to New Orleans, but Napoleon (likely seeing difficulties in keeping New France) offered to sell all of the French claims in the Mississippi river valley.
It was a chunk of Prime Real Estate that stretched from New Orleans into Canada and as far west as the Pacific Northwest, It covered 828,800 square miles and includes much of what is termed the wheat belt and the Rocky mountains. The transaction was completed on 30 April 1803 for $15 million.
