The United States acquired Oregon as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy the city of New Orleans from France but Napoleon needed money and suggested the United States buy all of the French lands on North America for $15 million dollars. It became a state on February 14, 1859, and was the 33rd state to join the union.
The Northwest Territories were obtained by the Treaty that the US signed in Paris.

Texas was annexed as a state to the union by giving up some of their northwest territories if the U.S. agreed to pay for its debts that Texas had acquired while it was a free republic.
