There are no certitude, but the most credible and scientifically accepted today is that Egyptians were using a ramp built of terracotta bricks and soil, progressively spiralling up to the top. Heavy stones were rolled on cylindrical wooden logs and pulled up, manually or by help of oxen or horses, on those ramps than most probably put on their definite place with the help of a wooden crane, similar to the actual north African shadoof. Vestiges of such ramps have been discovered in several location, sites of ancient Egyptian constructions.

Was the great pyramid built by slaves?

Yes and no The work force was a mixed one of slaves and free workers. A total of 20,000 to 30,000 workers would have been needed for the task. The slaves did all the heavy dangerous work such as quarrying, dragging the stones, putting them in place, extending and repairing the ramps used to raise the stones to the required level.

Why did they need so many people to build a pyramid?

First, many, many people had to cut into the rock formations, and cut huge perfect stones to pile up for the pyramids. Second, each of thousands of stones had to be moved from the rock quarry all the way to the pyramid location. It took many people to build the wood structures needed to start building the halls and rooms that would be deep inside the pyramid. If getting the stones to the pyramid took many people, then raising the stones and piling them atop each other was major. The stones were so terribly heavy that it took a bunch of manpower to raise them and position them. So it would not take many decades to finish the pyramid, many work parties were formed to haul, raise, and lay the stones. To get the pyramid finished before the Pharoah died and would be buried in the pyramid, many, many thousands of people had to work together.

How did they raise the stones so high on the great pyramid of Giza?

We do not know for sre, but the most credible and scientifically accepted today is that the Egyptians used a ramp built from rubble and desert clay, known as tafla. The ramp progressively spiralled upwards as the pyramid grew. Heavy stones were placed on sledges and pulled up manually by gangs of slaves. An average block used on the great pyramid weighed in at about 2.5 tons which needed about 20 slaves to drag it up the ramp. Vestiges of such ramps have been discovered in several location, sites of ancient Egyptian constructions.

What did they use to create pyramids?

They used slaves to drag sledges up ramps to raise and place the stones

What simple machine did the ancient egyptians use to help build the pyramids?

The most important "machine" was the inclined plane, the ramp used to raise the stones to the working level. The lever used to manhandle the stones into position and in the quarries to lift the stones onto the sledge on which they were transported. In the absence of the wheel the sledge with its narrow runners minimised the effects of friction.
