Have you ever considered what they had before that? Outhouses or slops. Slops you threw out the window into the street. That is why it used to be the rule that a couple walking together, the man walked closer to the street than the woman, so that if someone threw out slops as they passed under the window he would be more likely to be hit with the mess than she would!
