It had a wide master wheel which carried most of the weight of the machine and, through ground transaction, supplied power to operate the reel and the reciprocal knife. This machine required only 2 people to operate (a person to ride the horse and a man to rake the cut grain from the platform), it cut as much grain in 1 day as 4-5 men with cradles or 12-16 men with reaping hooks.
