Most Americans, north and south, did not believe that sedition against the US government was a good reason to advance any cause, not just freeing slaves. Violence instead of the rule of law was not condoned by Americans in general. The idea of a slave revolt was naturally not popular, even for those Americans that were against slavery. For hard core abolitionists, Brown was a martyr. Several civilians were killed in the retaking of the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry.
They felt it justified their suspicion of the Abolitionists - that they were planning violent revolution all over the South.
The north felt that Brown was a heroic freedom fighter, but the south felt that he had confirmed their worst fears about abolitionism as a violent revolutionary movement.
They didnt view it as a terrorist attack as the South did, but viewed it as an heroic attack to stand up for something that was wrong. Many people praised John Brown for his actions.
Made them think that Abolitionists were in favour of violent revolution. Encouraged secession.
