Most Americans, north and south, did not believe that sedition against the US government was a good reason to advance any cause, not just freeing slaves. Violence instead of the rule of law was not condoned by Americans in general. The idea of a slave revolt was naturally not popular, even for those Americans that were against slavery. For hard core abolitionists, Brown was a martyr. Several civilians were killed in the retaking of the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry.
