Legend has it that Harold supported William's claim to the throne as legitamte. However, when King Edward the Confessor died in January 1066, Harold rushed to London and had himself crowned King. As a result, William invaded England and defeated Harold at Hastings. The legend is that Harold promised to support Williams claim to the throne over his own, but when both the Witenagemot and King Edward himself (who was also supposed to have promised the throne to William) selected Harold to succeed Edward, he accepted it. This was a betrayal in William's eyes, and it committed the two kingdoms to War.

Basically; When Edward the Confessor died sadly he left no direct heir, and the throne of England passed to Harold. However, William of Normandy claimed that Edward had promised the crown to him, and claimed that Harold himself had sworn a sacred oath to relinquish his claim in William's favour. William prepared his invasion fleet and, armed with delaration of his right to the throne, he crossed the English Channel to land near Pevensey. Harold, in the meantime, had yet another threat to concern him; his brother Tostig allied with Harald Hardrada of Norway and landed in the north of England. They took York, however, Harold defeated them soundly at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. No sooner had the battle ended than Harold received news of William's invasion in the south. He marched his war worn men from York to Sussex, arriving there on October 13 to face the Normans.

King Harold was not ready at the start of the battle of Hastings because a few days before it he fought in the battle of Stamford Bridge so his men were tired and injured and they had no time to rest because Harold started to make his way to Hastings as soon as he heard that William had arrived. This was foolish of him because his men were not fit to fight yet

The Battle of Hastings was a pivotal moment in English history, marking the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The battle unfolded on a crisp autumn day, with King Harold II facing off against Duke William of Normandy. The clash resulted in Harold's defeat and William the Conqueror's ascension to the English throne.
well whenever a fight breaks out between the Montagues and the Capulets at the start of the play the prince comes and basically tells them to stop fighting or he'll have some of them executed
William landed at Pevensey on Sept. 28,1066 and for the next two week he reorganized his army and raided the countryside to collect supplies. Harold deployed his army on Senlac Hill, in the evening of Oct. 13, and William attacked the next morning.
