She started performing at the early age of 2, along side her two older sisters. Judy's mom saw the potential Judy had and made them travel and perform. They were named "The Gumm Sisters," because at the time, Judy's real name was actually Frances Gumm. However, knowing that Judy was outshining the other two sisters, her mother took her out of the group and then continued to have her perform solo. At age 13, Judy's mom signed a contract to MGM, for Judy to become an actress. It was also upon signing this contract where Frances Gumm became Judy Garland.

∙ 13y agoJudy Garland was a contract player in the early to late 30's at MGM, so she was already a part of the MGM team. she was not the first choice for Dorothy Gale. Shirley Temple was. However, Shirley was with Fox studios and could not be let out of her contract, so Judy was then picked after an audition.
