The British sent a fleet of about 850 ships across the English channel to dunkirk. Along with royal navy ships, civilian craft (yachts, lifeboat, motorboats, paddle steamers, and fishing boats) joined the rescue effort. They went back and fourth getting soldiers, this went on from May 26 to June 4. 338,000 battle-weary soldiers to safety.
When the Expeditionary Force was pushed back to the to the English Channel, for some reason the German Panzer's stopped on Hitler's orders. He feared committing his tank force to continuing the attack for fear that this was a trap. In actuality, he could have destroyed the British army at that time.
So goes the fortunes of war; an opportunity lost.
By stopping his Panzer's on the heights, this allowed the British to rescue their forces.
Anything that would float was commandeered to go across the channel and take the troops off and return them home to England. Thus, a viable fighting forces was available to fight another day.
