Films were watched in theaters much as they are today, only in 2D. Films were regularly broadcast on the Broadcast Networks CBS, NBC, ABC. Many local affiates also broadcast films. In the mid-70's, VCR's were starting to become mainstream. They allowed someone to record a broadcast and play it back later. There were a few cable channels and HBO that also showed films.
