Well, there is one near universally-accepted measurement system in the various sciences and it's called the metric system. In the metric system, the main unit for distance is called the meter. You can build off of this concept and come up with a kilometer (1000 meters) or a centimeter (.01 meters), or even much bigger or smaller things than a meter itself.
However, in the the United States, the Imperial system is used. This practice was gained through the British, in which instead of meters, feet, inches, miles and the like are used

Anyhow, or Science, the metric system is by far the most ubiquitous. This is because all calculations on thermodynamics, forces, pressures are done in the metric system.

Fun fact though: albeit in the United States, NASA calculates the trajectory of it's satellites, ships, etc. all in the metric system.

A team in science class placed a chalk mark on the side of a wheel and rolled the wheel in a straight line until the chalk returned to the same position the team then measured the distance the wheel?

They measured the distance the wheel traveled on the ground which would be the same as the circumference of the wheel. If they then measured the diameter of the wheel and divided the circumference by the diameter they would have a value for pi.
