Unfortunately, I'm having this work done right now, and it's a very extensive process. You have to take the entire dash of the car out - get down to the metal firewall in order to get to the heater and evaporator cores. According to a reputable (and friendly) mechanic I trust, it's 8 hours worth of labor just to tear down/build up the dash to get to the box that houses the heater and evap cores. This is not the kind of thing I could imagine undertaking on my own, but if you know how to take your car completely apart then have at it... Hope that helps...
