I use the 'brute force' method: 1) Shut off the pump and block the inlet and outlet water lines. 2) Remove that V-band clamp that secures the valve assembly to the filter body. 3) Use a submersible water pump to remove as much water as possible from the filter body (alternately, gently tip the 500+ lb. cannister to allow the water to slosh out). 4) Scoop as much of the 225 lbs. of sand as possible out of the filter body. 5) When possible, tip the filter body on its side and scoop out the remaining sand. 6) Thoroughly wash remaining sand from the filter body with a garden hose (remember to backwash that long tube that runs up the middle of the cannister). 7) Return the filter body to its little pedestal and ENSURE ITS FEET ARE FIRMLY SEATED! 8) Neatly pour in 225 lbs of new filter media. 9) Using a garden hose, add the several hundred pounds of water required to fill the filter body. 10) Clean, grease, and reinstall the filter gasket. 11) Clean the sealing surface of the valve assembly and gently but firmly seat it onto the filter body. 12) Reinstall the V-band clamp and tighten. 13) Remove the inlet and outlet hose blocks. 14) Ensure pump assembly is primed. 15) Set valve to "backwash" position and turn the pump on for about a minute (until discharge water clears). 16) Turn off pump, set valve to "filter to waste", and turn pump on for 10 seconds. 17) Turn pump off, set valve to "filter", and turn pump back on. 18) Check system for leaks (check for lost tools--you might have left anything inside the filter body). 19) If no leaks noted, go inside house, drink three cold beers, and make appointment with chiropractor.

Ah, yes. Well said. Especially the later part. However, you are going to find it difficult to move that 500# tank on it's side. Scoop out the sand or get a gadget the attaches to a garden hose and works on a venturi action sucking the sand and water out. You may find cheap ones at a hardware store or at a pool store.

Buy the correct sand and ask the pool shop where you get the sand about a ventury sand sucker. These attach to the garden hose and will suck all of the old sand out of the unit.

Pool pump works on circulate but not on filteration?

THis indicates that the pump is struggling to push water through a dirty bed of sand when on filter. When on recirculate, the water bypasses the sand and flows through the valve back to the pool. Change your sand or run a cleaner through it.

Doughboy pool pump motor turns no pressure?

Possibly you have a broken shaft or you may have a problem with the condensers that are needed to get the motor turning in the first place. These are usually situated in a little box on the top of the motor. A: No broken shaft. The "condenser" is called a capacitor. If you can remove the motor take it into your local pool store and they can check the motor and capacitor. You then will need a new pump seal and gasket once you get your motor from the repair shop. k

How do you bachwash a hayward pool pump?

You don't backwash a pump, you backwash sand and D.E. Filters. To clean them you change your valve to the backwash setting. To clean a pump basket you turn off the pump, open the lid and pull the pump basket out, dump the contents and place it back into the pump and replace the cover. You may or may not need to prime the pump before you turn it back on.
