To compose is to create something, whether a song or a poem or a story or even a letter. I need to compose a poem about love for my Creative Writing class. Compose can also refer to calming oneself (the noun is composure, the verb is to compose): My student was very nevous about giving her talk, so she took a few moments to compose herself before she began speaking.
