The smuggling of migrants and those activities related to it generate huge profits for the criminals involved and fuels corruption and organized crime. TV and movies would have you believe waves of illegal aliens breach the border unimpeded daily yet the vast majority of illegal entry into one country from another is easily done by individuals for a myriad of reasons.
Simply walking across the "border" in a quiet rural area is common. From Pedro's corn field to Bob's soya bean field. Crossing the border in John's Mercedes as a passenger and failing to disclose truthfully to the guard is more often than not the easiest way. By Plane, train, bus and boat, many enter without detection simply because they have a need to be somewhere the government doesn't want them to be.
