Polish people celebrate Christmas and open their presents on Christmas Eve. St. Nicholas gives children some small gifts on December 6. However the baby Jesus and his angels bring gifts on Christmas Eve but some areas have the Starman delivering gifts. During Advent, Poles generally do not have parties during Advent but Christmas lasts much longer than one day.

Advent includes events such as baking the Christmas Piernik (gingerbread) and making decorations. Christmas trees are placed outside in public areas and star carriers wander through streets and towns until Epiphany. A traditional Polish tradition is to share the oplatek (a thin wafer which has had a holy picture pressed into it).

Christmas Eve is first a day of fasting and the feasting. As soon as the first star appears, the feast can begin. This feast does not contain meat. That is followed by gift exchanging. Bits of hay are generally spread under tablecloths.

There has to be an even number of guests at the table, or it is believed that someone will die in the coming year. Guests break off a piece of Oplatek and eat it to symbolise their unity with Christ. This is followed by 12 dishes, one for each of the Twelve Apostles.
