He was born with bone claws that he can make emerge from his hands and retract back in. It's just one of the things that makes him a mutant. Later on in his life, he is kidnapped by Weapon X where he was experimented on and was forced to have adamantium fused to his bones. So his entire skeleton is now made of the metal, therefore his claws that were originally bone, are now adamantium.
