Air is just floating around. you don't need to fight for it unless you're drowning and a shark is keeping you from breathing. To compete for food, you just eat and fight and keep your food from other predators if you're a predator. Shelter can be stolen from other animals like how burrowing owls find empty burrows. Animals tend to share water. Most animals that go down to the waterhole are there to drink and have no intention of attacking another animal unless it's an alligator.

i think they compete over it when it comes toanimalswhere they be living in a desert or in atmosphere where it is really hot they might kill each other over it or even just compete over itand i think same thing goes for a tree. :)
