They generally get it through dirty water supply which some how mix with sewage water, as seawage water is one of the main source of getting E.coli, also it can be through unhygine condition of the place where the animals are kept like herds.. mostly where the feces of animal did not clean and they get it througth their own fecal matter.

∙ 12y agoA possible explanation for a cat suffering from stomache due to E. Coli, is that the cat ate a mouse or rat (which they are known to do) and they still had feces in their digestional system or in there big or little inteston. Or the mouse had a bowel movement in the digestional system.
