Ants show other ants where the food is by making a path with a chemical they secrete. Usually a scout will return to the nest while laying this chemical, and it will prompt several ants to help collect food, from experiments I have conducted, the ants seem to lay a more concentrated trail depending on how good the food is, using soft mints, the ants seem to turn up in the several dozens to crack open the shell and gobble up all the minty goodness inside.
