Barn Owls don't hoot, like typical owls, but instead produce ear-shattering screams and screeches. They can also hiss like a snake. Obviously these frightening noises help keep predators away, but when they are cornered or feel threatened they will lie on their back and flail long legs and talons as an effective defence. They attack prey with these talons, and I'm sure they could cause some serious gashes on predators. Hope this helps ;)
