When they sound out an echo, it bounces off of nearby prey, and the bat can hear the sound that bounces off of the prey. The rest of the sound just dissipates as it gets further and further away from the bat, until it eventually completely dissipates. Then, they know exactly where their prey is, and they can receive this information at the speed of sound, mostly since echo location involves sound.
