There are numerous ways to begin a letter. Depending on to whom you are sending the letter, there are different beginnings used.

Informal writing resolves itself around the use of the simplest greeting phrase, hej:

SWE:

Hej!

Jag heter...

ENG:

I am writing to you about the previous letter...

If you need to take a more formal approach, there is often no greeting phrase

involved. Instead, the heading of the letter gives the information of the reason why the letter is sent, and the beginning of the letter is often directly coupled to the heading:
