To escape predators, most birds fly away. If they are flightless birds, like penguins or ostriches, they will try to swim or fly away. If caught, a bird may bite, peck, and claw the attacker, sometimes beating it with its wings. Birds of Prey have very powerful talons, ans some of the larger species have even been known to kill humans. A kick from an ostrich or cassowary can also be lethal.
Y do people fight w/ each other sometimes? Most of the time it is to establish a "pecking order". Other times it is to see who is more dominate, and who ever wins gets either the land/territory or the female.
Fighting occurs between newly introduced chickens and the established flock, to find the new 'pecking order'. The 'pecking order' is a hierachy of chickens with the dominant at the top pecking the others.
If the fight is between females, it is likely to be reinforcing the pecking order. This type of fighting causes scabs on the comb, and missing feathers near the face. Sometimes, tail feathers are pulled out. Extreme cases turn into cannibalism if the other birds see blood. In this case, the OFFENDING hens need to be removed permanently from the flock, or killed. The victim(s) need to be taken out of the flock and given time for their wounds to COMPLETELY heal. When they are healed, reintroduce them.
Run of them mill feather picking (which leads to cannibalism) is caused by -
- Too many birds in too little space
- Not enough food/water
- Large flock size (40+)
- Lack of enrichment (free ranging, dust to bath in, things to peck at, etc)
- Lack of sunlight and appropriate levels of protein
Will look like hens are randomly plucking feathers. This needs to be stopped immediately by permanently removing the offenders/trimming their beaks, and providing the mentioned above missing facets of their life.
If the fight is between males, they are - again - fighting for dominance. But for cocks, this includes the right to mount the hens.
sometimes the animal does it for its own protection, and others will do it for their young, or themselves for food
