Depends on the stimulus :P If it's positive, for instance the smell of food or a mate, the butterfly will respond by moving towards it (and extending its proboscis in the case of food). If it's negative, such as cold or the sound of a predator, it will move away. They're not so different from us ;)

Butterflies respond to stimuli by flying away or avoiding their predators which can be: snake, bird, frogs, lizards, dragonfly and wasps. Butterflies also fly away from anything that can be a threat to them like for example, habitat destruction.
