The black clipon is to attach to your ear for measuring your pulse. It has to be clipped on all the way to get good readings. The white clipon is a safety cutoff. It will stop the treadmill if you fall. Hook it to the waistband of your shorts or sweats. I have one of hese machines. Hope this helps. Roger

Take of the plastic covering 3 screws on bottom, unscrew titlt wheel lever, turn key to on or start posistion there is a little metal clipon the bottom that you can pull out (not all the way) towards the key then on the back side of the cylinder you will see a lever in side a hole push it in the cylinder should come out
