What happens as fire burns something?

Large fires take on a life of their own. A conflagration can evolve into a firestorm if there is enough fuel and conditions are right. In a firestorm, the fire is so big that it depleats all the "local" oxygen from the air, and then air is "sucked in" from everywhere around the firestorm. Fires have several aids in getting bigger, the amount of accelerant (flammable fluids) used to start the fire, amount of brush, or things that can be set on fire, and oxygen. Examples are candles, in a candle you have a wax covered wick. When you like the wick it stays aflame because of the wax. Now if you have a candle in a jar and you light it and leave it lit with the lid off, the candle will burn until the wax is melted and the wick is gone, then it will go out. Now if you take a lid and cover the jar with the candle lit, the flame will go out because you prevented the fire from getting oxygen.
