Make sure the car is on level ground. A large piece of cardboard makes it very comfortable to lie on and it will also catch spilled oil. Have an oil filter wrench to loosen the old one. I believe the drain plug is 1/2". Use a socket wrench with a small extension. Make sure the pan for old will hold six quarts. Have two good funnels. One for the old oil and the other for the new. Put the old oil in the new oil containers and bring it to a collection place. do not pollute. Have a lot of rags on hand and newspaper for split oil. A few pair of disposable rubber gloves. Make sure the old oil filter gasket comes off with the filter doesn't stick on the engine. Don't lose the drain plug gasket. It's a dirty pain no matter how well prepared you are. Since you are saving money by doing it yourself spend a little extra for premium filter and oil.
1. you get under the explorer and find out where the oil pan drain bolt is
2. get a pan and put under the oil location first then remove the drain bolt
3. you let all of the oil drain out of the pan and put the oil bolt back in and tighten it up
4. you remove your oil filter and drain it,in my, by hand or you might need the wrench, replace it with a new oil filter, wet the new gasket with new oil.
5. you tighten up the oil filter sung with your hands and not a wrench
6. you add oil to the explorer should be about 5 quarts but put 4 in and then start it
7. check for any leaks and then let run for 4 min and then turn off and wait 10 min
8. check your oil you should be about 1 quart shy so add the last quart of oil and then you are all done changing your oil
