Firstly, all living things are made up of nonliving matter, particularly carbon, so to grow or reproduce, they must take in more carbon. A few primates have discovered they can use sticks to access food in inaccessible places, and that they can throw rocks and faeces to drive off enemies.

Humans are the ultimate user of tools. Wood and flint are used to make fire, which creates warmth, is used to kill potentially harmful bacteria and parasites in food by cooking, sheds light so we can see what is around is. Rocks and sticks, then metal, were used to make weapons for fighting (to claim a better environment) and hunting. Hides and fibres were used to make clothes, to protect us from sun, rain and wind; wood and stone can be used to build our own shelters, and so on.
