As you move higher, two things happen:
1) It gets colder.
2) The air gets thinner.
As it gets colder and there's less air, larger plants and animals have a hard time surviving, so smaller animals and foliage become more prevalent. At the base of the mountain, there are a lot of trees because of the suitable temperature. When you get higher, there's only going to be snow.
Mountain range and other similar geological formations can interact with air circulation, distributing heat differently around the area. It can also interfere with certain wildlife or plant life in the area.

Ice caps and mountains are not considered biomes because they are part of the biomes. For example the mountains are high up so they are cold which means that it's biome would be grassland or tundra, depending on where it is located. Ice caps are located in other physical features like mountains, oceans, glaciers, etc. so its biome would be tundra. So basically overall biomes just describe the climate or environment of a place and mountains and ice caps are actual places therefore they cannot be biomes.
Continentality is how far from the sea you are, this can affect the biomes as the land will heat up in the hot season, and the land will cool quicker in the cooler season. This can reduce precipitaion (rain) and increase the annual temperature range. Continetality can affect biomes such a Deserts

Geographical location has a huge impact on distribution channels. For example, if a place is located next to a river or ocean, distribution will likely be by ship. If it is located in the mountains, distribution will be either by land or by air.
