There are about 200 different species of owl. Most are nocturnal, meaning that they hunt during the night. Some are crepuscular, and they hunt around the times just after sunset and before sunrise. As hunters they prey on small mammals, insects and other birds. Some owls have specialized in eating fish. Most owls are solitary and they do not spend time with flocks of other owls.

Depending on the species they can live in many places and environments. They live off of rodents, and small animals and nest in many forms. There are burrowing owls who burrow on the ground in fields, but there are owls who live high in trees. The Great Horn Owl will live in the forest and in old forests are Gray Owls, but in places that snow you can find a Snow Owl. Owls adapt very well to cities and neighborhoods. Some people put up Owl boxes for owls to nest in so they can have a natural pest control for rodents.
