∙ 12y agoThanksgiving is an American holiday that celebrates family, community, friendship, and the hardwork and good fortune we have had throughout the year. Historically it is a celebration of the early American settlers (the pilgrims) who managed to survive in the "new world" with the help and friendship of the Native American peoples who already lived here (yes, there is a lot of political and historical issues, but the holiday is an idealization).Thankgiving is basically a celebration of a bountiful harvest and a bountiful year. It is a time to be thankful (hence the name) express gratitude for all you have, and to share your bounty with others (regardless of whether or not it has been a "good" year economically, etc. you try to look at the larger picture).
Today Thanksgiving in a national holiday, and the following Friday is usually a day off work or school as well. It focuses around an enormous meal that everyone works to make together, featuring "fall" foods such as turkey, cranberries, pumpkin, and potatoes. The most important aspect of Thanksgiving is that it must be celebrated with family or close friends. People travel thousands of miles to be with their families on Thanksgiving.
