In big cities, it looks like any other big city anywhere else in the world. Plus, some have dozens of big and poor neighbourhoods, known as "favelas".

Generally, there's no big difference between an american and a brazilian city with the same population. A lot of small stores, restaurants, some malls, etc.

In small cities, most of the citizens work for the government, at schools, hospitals, police, etc.

Again: nowadays, there's no big difference between an american and a brazilian way of living.
