Phytoplankton helps to balance carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere while the ocean absorbs it. If there were no phytoplankton left, then carbon dioxide levels would increase in the atmosphere.

Phytoplankton fix carbon dioxide into sugar in sunlit areas of water. These plankton make the ocean one of the largest carbon sinks in the world, if not the largest. This plankton is then eaten by larger animals who respire the sugar to gain energy and give off carbon dioxide.
