For the most part this is false. Red ear slider females need to be atleast 6 inches and atleast 3 years old but usually 4 to 5 years old.
Males need to be 5 inches and atleast 2 years old but usually closer to 3 or 4 years old.
So basically unless your turtles are atleast 3 years old then there will be no mating, the male might try but the female will usually not "accept" until she is ready.

∙ 14y agoMales become sexually mature between 2 and 5 years of age (usually around 4" long). Females reach sexual maturity later in age, between 5 to 7 years (6 to 8" long).
Females usually nest in May and June. The females have to have a place to dig (sand mixture) in order to bury their eggs. If they do not have a place to dig to lay the eggs outside of the water (to avoid drowning) then the female may become egg bound by refraining from laying the eggs.
