Because it might be that they're being used in today's foods, used with certain things that we know & use today, etc( I don't know); but definitely they tell us a lot about our past, the Earth's past, life's history, & part of the universe's history(or at least part of our solar system's history). They gives us records of past tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc; impact events like the asteroid that caused the KT event, etc; etc. A big part of it is curiosity & by knowing the past we can predict or know what might happen in the future. We want to know everything to survive as a species and because it can also be interesting to read or learn more about something.

They are important in indefinite ways. Here are just a few examples.

1. They support all living things physically-they are what you stand on.

2. They are source of soil(rocks are weathered and turn to soil), upon which most plants grow. And plants are the beginning of most food chains.

3. They are sources of metals and elements we need to produce our daily necessities.

4. Materials for buildings and man-made structures.

5. Many, many more.
