There are two common types of herpes that can be passed in a few different ways.
Oral herpes HSV1 (what causes fever blisters and cold sores and is very common to have) is often passed by being innocently kissed on or around the mouth by some one that has a visible break out. You don't have to have oral sex or intercourse to get this type of herpes on the mouth. How ever this virus can also be passed to the genital through receiving oral sex from some one that has a break out of cold sores or fever blisters. There is also a small chance of passing oral herpes through sharing cups or utensils with some one that has cold sores.
Genital herpes HSV2 is rarely passed out side of having intercourse or oral sex with some one that has had a break out or has a break out in progress. It's rare but genital herpes can be passed to the mouth if you give some one with genital herpes oral sex.

Herpes can affect people in a few ways. Emotionally it can devastate some people to find out that they have it. Most people don't think that they can get herpes. Any one that has intercourse is at risk of contracting it. It's a change to some people and also some people don't know a lot about it so it can be scary at first for them to deal with having it. Physically herpes commonly affects the skin on the mouth causing cold sores or on the genitals causing genital herpes. Break outs can vary in symptoms, the initial break out is usually the most pain full thing one may ever experience. Some people with herpes also report having lower back pains or leg pain around the time they have a break out. Besides that herpes shouldn't affect your life all that much, it shouldn't hold you back from doing what you want with your life.
