They nurse them until around 8- 10 weeks, then they usually start taking them on outings and showing them how to forage. They are fiercely protective of their babies, and show their young how to fight as well. Some young females will stay with their mother up to a year old.
Saw a momma squirrel today at the foot of an oak tree with what looked like another squirrel wrapped around her. The other squirrel unwrapped and it was a juvenile squirrel about half her size. She then nuzzled its tummy and picked it up. The baby was wrapped around her neck and somehow she was carrying it. She ran a few yards, put the baby down nuzzled it as if to get a better grip then proceeded to run with the baby to the corner and take a left turn.
The kits are nursed by the mother for about 8 weeks and soon begin to follow their mother on foraging expeditions where they learn how to find food. In the fall of their first year they may leave the mother and set out on their own. However, many will spend the first winter with the mother before leaving in the spring.
There are many ways in which a squirrel will teach their young. A squirrel will teach their young to hunt for food.
A mother squirrel carries her baby in her mouth. The baby curls up into a tiny ball and the mother can carry it in her mouth.
