Also called steel pans, the "pan" is made of a steel that can be hardened, it is hammered into shape having local raised areas and depressions. the steel is hardened and the bumps will resonate when struck with rubber hammers making the sound. Different size bumps resonate at different frequencies giving method of tuning the areas of the pan.
