Probably human's nature to categorize and group things. It's natural to group like things together so its possible that stereotyping came from that tendency, grouping races, religions and sexes together because of similarities among them.

Stereotypes are generalized beliefs about a group of people, and when individuals internalize and apply these stereotypes to judge or discriminate against others, prejudice can result. This can lead to negative attitudes, behaviors, and biases towards individuals based on characteristics associated with their group. Stereotypes can also reinforce existing power dynamics and inequalities, perpetuating social division and hindering intergroup relations.

Stereotypes cause prejudice because it is a false misconception about a race, which ruins their reputation. For example, it is a common stereotype that african-americans cause a lot of crimes. This is a very untrue statement, but a lot of people believe it, and so therefore that can lead people to become racist against blacks, when in reality the stereotype isn't even true. This doesn't just apply to african-americans though -- all races have stereotypes that cause misconceptions in their race, and therefore lead to racism.
