Bedouins have adapted to living in desert environments by developing knowledge of water sources, survival skills like hunting and gathering, and using camels for transportation. They have also developed a communal lifestyle, moving in small groups to find grazing land for their animals while also trading goods with other tribes for resources they may lack.

As the Bedouins keep herds of goats, they eat (or drink) milk, cheese and yoghurt. They can have meat from their live stock, and they wear long and loose clothing to protect them from the sun, such as a hooded robe (called a jalabiyya) and they cover their heads with cloth, also as a sign of respect. They sleep in cloth tents that are divided into two rooms with a woven curtain (called a ma'nad). They may have a well that they can get water from, but they can also take it from plants that hold water if they are desperate.

The Bedouin comes from the Arabic "Bedi" which means "Desert". A Bedouin is basically the Arabic word for a desert-dweller, so the nomadic desert-dweller is by definition a Bedouin. They continue to live in deserts because this is their heritage.

How do Bedouins live in such a harsh environment?

The Bedouins do not view the environment in which they live as harsh. It is just a way of life for them. Others may view their lifestyle as harsh because it is not what they are accustomed or used to. The Bedouins in Israel raise livestock and farm. They create their own teas and coffees. They enjoy education and build their own villages. A harsh environment is all in the eye of the beholder. Many Bedouins are thrilled to be able to live with this lifestyle.
