I don't know much on the subject but i watched a video in school resently which showed a group of Amazon tribe people thrusting these special peices of wood into the water. This would trigger some chemicals in the wood to go into the water and cause it to lose oxygen. The fish in the water would then rise to the surface to try to breathe, making them easy targets for spears.
